The Phoenix Convention Center is committed to achieving sustainable event excellence with each event that comes through our doors. To do so, we work closely with meeting and event planners to ensure the meetings, conventions and events at the facility are utilizing best practices for sustainability.
The facility recently invested in a mobile billboard featuring a “Roadmap to Sustainability Success” to be displayed during event move-in and move-out dates with the aim of heightening awareness around our green initiatives.
Sarah Bentley, the Phoenix Convention Center’s Sustainability Coordinator, said there are various ways meeting and event planners can commit to sustainability.
“Event planners can make a significant difference by embracing digital tools, such as distributing conference details electronically and offering registration and agendas online or through apps,” Bentley said. “That’s a big win. These simple actions drastically cut down on paper usage, promoting a more mindful use of resources and materials that bring these events to life.”
If a meeting or convention requires badge holders and lanyards, Bentley said attendees can opt for eco-friendly options. This applies also to reusable materials, providing reusable water bottles for attendees and encouraging refills at designated stations to reduce plastic use is an excellent way to increase the sustainability score of an event.
“We are here as a resource,” Bentley said. “While you’re planning your next event at the Phoenix Convention Center, we want to ensure that it is impactful to attendees, but not to our environment.”
Bentley said exhibitors, too, can commit to achieving sustainable event excellence. By reducing packaging materials, bringing only necessary materials for attendees, using LED lighting, sourcing products and services from local vendors and donating leftover materials, exhibitors can significantly reduce their environmental impact.
Additionally, there are best practices in catering that can help to improve the sustainability of an event.
“Donating surplus food, opting for reusable dishware and cutlery, minimizing disposables and composting are excellent ways for an event to lessen its environmental impact,” Bentley said. “All of the seemingly little choices add up. We want to see our events succeed while also making a positive social impact by putting resources back into the community.”
