The Phoenix Convention Center unveiled this week a new sustainability dashboard on its website. This dashboard aims to enhance the monitoring of energy and water consumption, as well as track the facility’s recycling, composting, food donation, and material repurposing efforts. This initiative is part of the Convention Center’s ongoing effort to anchor sustainable practices in the everyday activity at the venue.

“By having real-time data on energy and water usage, we can make informed decisions on how to reduce consumption,” said Sustainability Coordinator Sarah Bentley. “This can lead to the implementation of energy-saving measures and water-efficient practices that lower utility costs and reduce our environmental footprint.”

Monitoring this data will allow the Convention Center a chance to course correct if ever there are instances of resources being used less efficiently. With this, staff can pinpoint times when energy use spikes and can adjust the HVAC operations or lighting schedule.

Tracking the data also allows the Phoenix Convention Center to compare usage over time and against industry benchmarks to gauge the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives and drive continuous improvement.

“More and more we are seeing clients and attendees who have high expectations for the sustainability efforts of the venues they are in,” said Assistant Director of the Phoenix Convention Center & Venues Bob Fingerman. “Providing a transparent view of the Convention Center’s sustainability efforts help us to meet those expectations and could prove to be a deciding factor for event planners when looking to select a destination for their meeting or convention.”

This data-forward approach is part of the Phoenix Convention Center’s long-held belief that metrics should be used to inform decisions. But this shows more than just metrics, it shows the facility’s commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement by engaging stakeholders and securing a competitive edge in the market.

“Through tracking and proactive management of energy, water, and waste, the Convention Center can achieve sustainability excellence and serve as a model for others in the industry,” Bentley said.

The dashboard, updated monthly with new data, offers event planners valuable resources, including a checklist for sustainable event excellence and a roadmap to sustainability success at the Phoenix Convention Center.
