America's Friendliest Airport

SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS

Phoenix Sky Harbor is continually working with police, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to keep pace with security needs at Sky Harbor. Some of those changes involve construction and are outlined below.

Checkpoint Improvements
Terminal 3: In 2007, two security screening lanes were added to the south checkpoint at Terminal 3, increasing the total number of lanes from two to four. The north checkpoint in Terminal 3 was expanded as well, with the number of security screening lanes increased from four to six.

Terminal 4: There have been multiple checkpoint improvements in Sky Harbor's busiest terminal. In the fall of 2006, screening lanes were increased from four to nine at Checkpoint B. In 2005, Sky Harbor added four security lanes to its busy Checkpoint A, and opened a new, six-lane Checkpoint D. Expansion of Checkpoint C to increase screening lanes from four to eight has begun. The estimated date of completion is December 2009.

Behind the Scenes Baggage Screening
Remember the days when you could check your luggage at the ticket counter and just walk away? Those days are back. Sky Harbor has installed a new behind-the-scenes baggage screening system. This allows the TSA to screen checked luggage as it makes its way to the plane. Because this system is built right into the baggage conveyor system, those giant luggage screening machines are being moved out of the lobbies at Sky Harbor, giving you more room to walk and increasing efficiency for both the TSA and the airlines.
