Tips for Trick-or-Treaters
- Only approach houses that are lit
- Stay away from animals (pets) that you do not know
- Younger kids: trick-or-treat with an adult
- Older kids: trick-or-treat in groups (tell an adult your route and the time you will be back)
- Carry a flashlight
- Walk, don’t run
- Stay on sidewalks
- Cross street in groups and look for cars
- Stay in familiar neighborhoods
- Parents should inspect candy for signs of tampering before it is eaten
Costumes:
- Make sure costumes do not drag on the ground
- Be sure kids can see with masks
- Shoes should fit (even if they do not go with the costume)
- Carry only flexible knives, swords, or other props
- Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape/ or use glow sticks
Tips for Homeowners:
- Clear your yard of ladders, hoses, etc (anything that can trip trick-or-treaters)
- Secure pets so they do not bite trick-or-treaters
- Battery powered jack o’ lantern candles are safer than real flames
- If you use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where trick-or-treaters will be walking or standing
Tips for Drivers:
- Drive slowly
- Watch for trick-or-treaters (kids are excited and are not looking for cars)
