EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2008
KRIS PACKARD # 6501, TRAVIS SEVEDGE # 6974, LORI DEMSki # 8108, MILO KAUFFMAN # 8139, KEVIN MURPHY # 8517, DANIEL ERICKSON # 9087

On August 23, 2008, at 0332 Hours, A male suspect committed five counts of aggravated assault on E. Indian School Road by firing a handgun into the apartment occupied by his ex-girlfriend, two other adults, and two infants.  the suspect fled the scene and drove to his apartment complex.  Officer Erickson answered up to the emergency traffic report of shots fired on E. Indian School Road and Officers Demski and Kauffman answered up from the 72 area, when no other 71 area officers were available.

All three officers circulated the property a witness, directed them towards an apartment into which the shots had been fired.  the three adults initially identified as the only victims present, and were not forthcoming with information and declined prosecution.  Even though these victims failed to recognize the seriousness of the incident, the Officers knew they could not let such a serious violent crime pass without prosecution.  Instead of simply writing an information received report, they began gathering as much suspect information as they could from the victims, and began an investigation into a Shannon’s Law violation.

They conducted a thorough investigation including interviews of the victims, photographing and collecting evidence, and impounding evidence for DNA analysis.  Through the interviews, the Officers were able to piece together the suspect’s identification, the vehicle he had been driving, and a possible destination of the suspect.  This information was passed onto Officers, They were asked to check apartments along 32nd Street from Thomas to Indian School Road and to look for the suspect’s vehicle.  the Officers located the suspect vehicle.  It was then that the ex-girlfriend provided the suspect’s apartment number and the fact that there had been two infants, inside her apartment at the time the suspect had opened fire.  This changed the incident into a Domestic Violence-Aggravated Assault investigation.

The Officers set up a limited containment on the suspect’s apartment and stood by until additional Officers arrived.  All officers began setting up a plan to communicate and contact the suspect.  Just as Officer Demski was initiating the telephone call into the suspect’s apartment, he stepped out and was immediately taken into custody.  the suspect was found to still be in possession of ammunition and his handgun was located concealed under a bush just outside his apartment just feet from where he was arrested.

Officers re-contacted the victims to let them know the suspect had been arrested as he was trying to return to their apartment.  When they learned this, they decided to assist in prosecution.
